Banana Industrial Research & Development Center (BIRDC) History

The journey of the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) and its evolution into the Banana Industrial Research & Development Center (BIRDC) is a testament to Uganda’s commitment to innovation and sustainable economic growth. This ambitious initiative, rooted in the vision of transforming the banana sector, has traversed several stages, each marked by strategic planning, research, development, and collaboration.

The Genesis: PIBID Concept (FY 2005/06)

The story begins with a concept nurtured by dedicated professionals at Makerere University (MUK). Recognizing the untapped potential of the banana sector, these scientists envisioned a future where bananas could be more than just a staple food – they could be a catalyst for economic transformation. This initial concept laid the groundwork for what would become PIBID.

Development Stage (FYs 2006/07 - 2016/17)

With the concept in place, the next phase focused on intensive research and development (R&D). During this period, scientists and researchers worked tirelessly to develop innovative technologies and processes for banana value addition. The Government of Uganda (GOU), through the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MOFPED), provided crucial funding support, recognizing the potential of PIBID to create jobs, boost exports, and improve livelihoods.

Transformation Stage (FYs 2017/18 - 2020/21)

This stage witnessed the transformation of PIBID from a concept into a tangible reality. The approvals for industrial formation marked a turning point, leading to the establishment of the Pilot Plant. The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) played a pivotal role in this phase, providing policy guidance and support for the development of the banana industry.
The establishment of the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) further accelerated the transformation process. The TBI, with support from the Science, Technology, and Innovation – Office of the President (STI-OP), fostered an environment of innovation, providing entrepreneurs and researchers with the resources and mentorship needed to develop and commercialize banana-based products.

Commercialization Stage (FYs 2021/22 - 2025/26)

This is the stage where PIBID’s vision truly takes flight. The operationalization of the Pilot Plant and the Commodity Trade Centre (CTC) paved the way for the commercial production and marketing of Tooke flour, BIRDC’s flagship gluten-free product. Market testing through the CTC allowed for valuable feedback and refinement of the product and its marketing strategies.

Industrial Take-off (FY 2026/27 onwards)

The culmination of years of research, development, and strategic planning is the envisioned industrial take-off. With the establishment of the Tooke Trade Centre and the upcoming Industrial Technology Park (ITP), BIRDC is poised to significantly expand its production capacity and market reach. The ITP will facilitate large-scale production, enabling BIRDC to meet the growing global demand for gluten-free products and solidify its position as a leader in the banana value addition industry.

The Wider Banana Sector

The ultimate goal of this journey extends beyond BIRDC itself. By creating a thriving banana value chain, BIRDC aims to stimulate the wider banana sector, creating opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs, and communities across Uganda. The anticipated expansion into the wider banana sector (FY 2026/27 onwards) signifies a new era of sustainable growth and economic development.
The journey from PIBID concept to BIRDC’s industrial take-off has been one of dedication, innovation, and collaboration. Through strategic government support, scientific expertise, and entrepreneurial spirit, Uganda is harnessing the potential of its banana resources to create a brighter future for its people. With continued investment and commitment, BIRDC is set to make a lasting impact on the global market, showcasing the best of Ugandan innovation and entrepreneurship.
